I'm pretty sure this video was taken on Ivarčko jezero (Lake Ivarčko), Koroška region in Slovenia. I used to spend a lot of time there - and it looks like it hasn't changed much. To my greatest surprise I've also noticed the folklore group I used to be a member of - and that teal color dress is probably what I was dancing in during my teenage years with Pastirci folklore group from Podgorje.

Anyway, Šempetrski šopek (Šempeter's Bouquet) is playing an old song by Štirje kovači (The Four Blacksmiths), ensemble from Slovenj Gradec. I remember the lyrics of the tune but can't think of its title at the moment.

Polka is a type of dance, and also a genre of dance music. It originated in the middle of the 19th century in Bohemia, and is still a common genre of Czech, Polish and Slovenian folk music; it is common both in Europe and in the Americas. In classical music, many polkas were composed by both Johann Strauss I and his son Johann Strauss II; a couple of well-known ones were composed by Bedřich Smetana and Jaromír Vejvoda, the author of Škoda lásky ("Roll Out the Barrel").

The name comes from German word Polka[1], meaning "Bohemian Dance" which comes from the Czech word polka, also meaning "Bohemian dance", which itself is lent from the Polish polka, literally meaning "Polish woman", fem. of Polak. The word may also be an German-originating alteration of Czech pulka, meaning "half." Due to its name it is often mistakenly attributed to Poland. La polca (o polka) -derivado de polaca- es una danza popular aparecida en Bohemia hacia 1830.

Su forma deriva directamente del minué, con una instrucción que prepara la entrada del tema y una coda que sirve de final a la obra.

Los compositores bohemios, Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884) y Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904), compusieron polcas, introduciendo esta danza en la música académica.

También los músicos de la familia Strauss (austriacos) compusieron muchas polcas. Entre las más conocidas están la "polka pizzicatto" o el "triszt traszt polka". Un ejemplo de polka contemporánea es la "circus polka" de Igor Stravinsky.

Historia de La Polca Paraguaya: Danza y canción de movimiento rápido y acompasado. Su nombre deriva de la polca europea -de gran difusión en Paraguay desde mediados del siglo XIX- pero su ritmo, melodía, armonía y contrapunto característicos no guardan relación con la misma.

La polca paraguaya combina ritmos ternarios con binarios y síncopas, mientras que la polca europea es de ritmo binario. La yuxtaposición de ritmos de tres tiempos en el acompañamiento y de carácter binario de la melodía, produce una síncopa permanente, que, sumada a otra que anticipa o prolonga la melodía, le otorga un estilo peculiar.

La primera referencia en el país acerca de la polca como danza proveniente de la zona Bohemia, data de 1858. En tanto que las referencias a una música nacional, con matices y personalidad local, datan ya de comienzos de 1800. Se piensa que los paraguayos se apropiaron del nombre de polca simplemente para definir su música.

Las polcas más antiguas del Paraguay, que datan del siglo XIX son: Campamento Cerro León, Alfonso Loma, Mamá Cumanda, Che Lucero Aguai'y, Ndarekoi La Culpa, Carreta Guy, y de los partidos políticos colorado y liberal, entre otras. Existen numerosas variantes de acuerdo al ritmo y el carácter como: polca syryry, polca kyre'y, polca popo, polca saraki, polca galopa, polca jekutu. A lo largo del siglo XX varios músicos intentaron sustituir el nombre de polca por Kyre'y, Techagau, y otros como Danza Paraguaya

QUEMIL YAMBAY

Aún casi adolescente, Quemil Yambay inicia la aventura de conocer el mundo a través de la música. En 1959 se acopla a los obreros constructores del Puente de la Amistad, obra que después uniría físicamente al Paraguay con el Brasil; ahí empieza a poner en evidencia su arte musical que lo llevaría a tener el extraordinario suceso que conserva hasta hoy. El que más tarde fue fundador de Los Alfonsinos y autor de composiciones tan famosas como Moköi Guyra´i, Lidia Mariana y tantas otras, no se habrá imaginado jamás que de aquellas primeras presentaciones en reuniones de amigos o en casa de algún familiar, donde empezaron a brindarle los primeros aplausos, el éxito lo llevaría a actuar como los de San Lorenzo de Almagro, Huracán o el Luna Park, en Buenos Aires y otros escenarios del mundo.

Este renombrado autor, compositor e intérprete de la guitarra nació el 10 de marzo de 1938 en el lugar denominado Tupaorã, jurisdicción de Caraguatay. Hoy distrito de Santa Elena. Hijo de Jalil Yambay, un sirio libanés que llegó el Paraguay en aras de forjarse un mejor porvenir, y Marina de la Paz Rodríguez, el niño Quemil pasó gran parte de su infancia en el pueblo de Alfonso Tranquera, lugar que inspiraría más adelante el nombre de Los Alfonsinos, su primer grupo musical y a interpretar la canción de autor anónimo Alfonso Loma, que sería el trampolín que lo impulsó al extraordinario éxito que lo acompaña hasta la fecha.

En su biografía, que está siendo redactada por Lionel Ortiz Bareiro, Quemil Yambay expresa lo siguiente: "Nadie olvida los días que se fueron cuando ellos descansan las horas gratas de nuestra existencia. Puedo afirmar que aún veo los años de mi escuela donde aprendí las letras, puedo manifestar que no he olvidado el nombre de mi maestra de primeros grados --Isabel Caballero-, su imagen, su recuerdo y su bondad, aún conservo hasta entonces".

Slovenian-style polka bands usually perform using the following instruments:

piano accordion or button box accordion
saxophone (or clarinet)
banjo (for polkas) and/or guitar (for waltzes)

Slovenian-American polka is generally played at a faster tempo than Polisj-American.

Cleveland and northeast Ohio is the main center of Slovenian-style polka music - along with Pennsylvania and many other cities in the Great Lakes region. No wonder Slovenian-American polka is often referred to as "Cleveland-Style" polka.

Bands, playing Slovenian-style polka music have also expanded their repertoire by including a variety of elements and styles from other kinds of genres like polkas, waltzes, standards, Latin dances (cha chas, tangos, etc.), line dances, and even rock 'n roll.

Charles Keil further subdivided Polish-American Polka into Chicago Style and Eastern Style.

Chicago-style polka music is closely related to the rock-and-roll era of the ’50s. It's sometimes referred to as the “push” style because of the intense “bellows-shaking” of the accordion.

Chicago-style polka band typically includes a trumpet or two, an (always present) accordion, a concertina, drums, a bass, and sometimes a clarinet or a fiddle.
